In a move to enhance communication and transparency between local self-government institutions and the public, the Government of Kerala has officially sanctioned the utilization of institutional funds for social media management.
Issued as G.O. (Ordinary) No. 1035/2023/LSGD dated 15 May 2023, the order grants permission for municipalities and municipal corporations to engage individuals or agencies to manage social media platforms. The primary goal is to disseminate timely and accurate information related to developmental schemes, project updates, and government initiatives directly to the public.
️ The decision follows proposals submitted by the Mayors of the Kochi and Kozhikode Municipal Corporations in September and December 2022, respectively. After careful consideration, the government approved the request as a step under the National Urban Governance Initiative.
Through this order, local governments are empowered to hire communication professionals or agencies under proper contract procedures. The expense for these services will be met from the respective institution’s Development Fund (Plan Fund), without exceeding financial limits set for the municipal and panchayat categories.
